Sausage Bread
I made Sausage Bread for Sunday School yesterday morning. This dish is a top favorite of the class, my brother-in-law, Brendan, and M.C. People always say they can't believe it only has three ingredients, and that it is so simple to make!

Sausage Bread
1 can refrigerated pizza dough (I use Pillsbury.)
1 lb. package ground pork sausage, browned and drained
2 cups shredded cheddar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Coat bar pan or cookie sheet with cooking spray. Roll pizza dough onto prepared pan. Sprinkle evenly with sausage and cheese. Beginning with one of the long sides, roll dough in jelly-roll fashion. Turn the seam side down on the baking sheet, and pinch ends.
Bake at 350° for 30 minutes, or until browned. Remove from oven. Let stand for about 10 minutes before slicing.
This recipe has had me drooling since I first spotted it, so I couldn't wait to make it! FINALLY, tonight...
ReplyDeleteI used Pillsbury regular pizza crust dough, Jimmy Dean hot pork sausage, and Cracker Barrel extra sharp cheddar cheese. Unfortunately, despite draining ALL of the grease from the sausage (I even patted w/ paper towels afterward!), the dish turned out greasy. Maybe the grease from the cheese plus the sausage was too much... Anyway, although the crust was just fine (although next time I will brush with egg white before baking to get that nice gloss), the "bread" (pizza dough) on the inside didn't turn out at all like yours, which looks like bread! Mine looks like flaky layered biscuits instead of nice bread with height and density. Or maybe that was from the grease...?
Next time I will experiment with a different sausage, like Jimmy Dean 50% lean pork sausage or a comparable beef product if I can find it. Or possibly chicken andouille (cajun sausage). Also I would add some kind of vegetable, perhaps the Cajun Trinity (sauteed onion, celery, bell pepper). I have some THIN Pillsbury pizza crust that I'd like to try... or perhaps some fresh pizza dough from Trader Joe's.
Anyway, this is a tasty, easy recipe that makes a great starting point for experimentation/variation. Thanks so much for posting it! Looking forward to trying your other recipes as well. :)
P.S. After placing the refrigerated pizza dough on the cookie short, are you supposed to thin/spread it out to cover the entire pan before sprinkling the cheese and sausage on it? I wasn't sure about that. Thanks.
